Cat lovers may disagree, but dogs are man's best friend. And what better way for a pair of dog lovers to celebrate this monumental day than by getting their own pooches to tie the knot?

Andrea Johnston, 64, and her 30-year-old daughter Stacey Kilpatrick were worried that their newfoundland terrier Harry was lonely and went on the hunt for his perfect puppy partner online via dog holiday company Barking Mad.

After Harry had had major surgery on his cruciate ligament, they became worried that he was beginning to get lonely, so owners went looking for his own princess to keep him company.

So they were delighted when 50-year-old Helen Teevan put forward her springer spaniel Maeghan to be Harry's furry forever friend - and in good news for romantics everywhere, looks like it was canine love at first sight.

As big fans of the Royal Family, Harry's owners decided the pooches should have a ceremony on the same day as their royal namesakes, and so the dogs got 'married' at a ceremony in Harry's owners' back garden in the village of Leslie, Fife in Scotland.

What's more, Harry's owners even received best wishes from Kensington Palace after they sent news of the name of their pets, and their plans to have them married on the same day as the real Harry and Meghan.

"We were so excited about the alternative Royal Wedding," said Stacey. "We love the royal family and even named our beloved Harry after Prince Harry."

Helen was equally pleased that her dog Maeghan had been picked to walk down the proverbial aisle.

"When we heard that Harry was looking for his Meghan we thought it would be a bit of a laugh and so put our gorgeous girl forward," she said.

"We were amazed when she was picked but so glad Maeghan will be Harry's special furry friend."

After Maeghan was chosen to be the bride, the three owners got together to plan the big day. Elaine Warburton, who runs Barking Mad, is equally delighted that she was able to help bring Harry and Maeghan together.

"We all adore our Prince Harry," she said. "He's such a gorgeous, friendly boy and is always happy despite having to undergo major surgery on his cruciate ligament in late 2017.

"The holiday host he stays with absolutely loves looking after him when Stacey and Andrea go away."
