If you thought that the biggest gaming comebacks of the autumn were going to be Shenmue, Red Dead Redemption or Crackdown, you're in for a surprise.

One of the biggest names in the history of video games is making a return and bringing all its friends along - the SNES is back.

Nintendo has announced that it is relaunching the classic console with a whole raft of all-time favourite games, featuring more iconic characters than we can list here.

Alright, go on then. Prepare to reacquaint yourself with Donkey Kong, Super Mario, Zelda, Kirby, Mega Man, Star Fox and more.

Pre-included titles include the likes of Super Castlevania IV, EarthBound Street Fighter II Turbo: Hyper Fighting, Final Fantasy III, Yoshi's Island, Super Ghouls 'n' Ghosts, F-ZERO, Contra III: The Alien Wars...well, we could go on. It's wall-to-wall classics and we could not be more excited about it.

Proper gaming geeks will be excited to see the release of Star Fox 2, the sequel to the 1993 rail shooter that was an instant classic. Star Fox 2 was completed way back in the '90s and scheduled for a 1995 release, only to be cancelled with the coming of the Nintendo 64. Gaming fans have been waiting over 20 years to have a crack at it and will finally get the chance.

There are significant upgrades on the original to bring the SNES in line with technological advances, including an HDMI cable adaptor that will allow you to view the classic titles in the best possible resolution.

Nintendo is dropping the SNES Classic on September 29 as the mini-console, building on the success of its NES re-release last autumn. It will retail at $79.99 (£63) and sales are expected to be rapid.

The NES reboot disappeared from shelves almost as soon as it arrived and it is now a collector's item after it was discontinued earlier in 2017.
