Lauren S. Hissrich, the showrunner for Netflix's adaptation of The Witcher, has taken a hiatus from Twitter following criticism for her casting criteria.
According to Digital Spy, it was recently revealed that Netflix planned to hire a Black, Asian and minority ethnic (BAME) actress to play the role of Ciri.
As fans of the gaming series will know, Ciri is depicted as a young, white woman, but a leaked casting call supposedly asked for "a 16 or 15 year old BAME girl who can play down to 13/14."
In direct response to this leak, many fans took to Twitter to share their thoughts - and most believe casting a BAME actress as Ciri is the wrong decision.
Hissrich previously stated that the author of the novels - which the show is based on - Andrzej Sapkowski, told her "the Continent is big and diverse in its population, in every way (race, culture, gender, and yes, occasionally skin color, which he said he did not always specify).
"I'm not sure how people insinuate I'm destroying the books by recognizing that. I'm honoring the author's own intentions. He told me so himself," and many fans have her back, too.
Seeing as Henry Cavill, AKA Superman, has been announced to play Geralt of Rivia, we probably won't have to wait long to discover who eventually grabs the role of Ciri.
Do you think Ciri should be portrayed as white or does skin colour not matter? Should it depend on acting skill rather than race? Let us know what you think.
