You Can Make Your Own Hive Maps In ‘Gears 5’
Gears 5 will ship with a map builder so you can build your own multi-stage missions for the game's Escape mode, the co-op mode where you're trying to escape a locust-filled hive.
Developer The Coalition has published a video that makes the map builder look really straightforward and easy to use. Using a selection of simple room layouts, you can quickly assemble a map on a grid. You can make the whole mission take place on one floor by placing an exit area, or if you place down a safe room then you can use that as a checkpoint and load the players into another floor of the hive to explore.
You also have control over the type and number of enemies that spawn in each room, and you can place the weapons and ammo exactly how you want throughout the map. Between those tools you can make a viciously difficult Escape run or be kinder to your players and give them access to more guns than the locust can handle.
One of the big parts of the Escape mode is the cloud of venom that can sweep through areas of the map, poison anyone caught in its cloud. You can control where the gas spawns and how quickly it spreads.
You can play the maps you make locally with two friends or share it online for anyone to download and play.
While cookie cutter map builders don't allow for the creative possibilities and variation of a more powerful map maker, Gears 5's map builder looks simple enough to use on console and it's certainly better than nothing. I do miss the days when more games came with mod tools, though. Back in the 90s and the early 00s you could look forward to popular games receiving years of support from modders who would expand games in both sensible and bizarre ways. Sometimes a mod would play like an official expansion, while other mods would give you a surreal look into the creators mind.
Hopefully Gears 5's map maker will be well-used and it will give cause to The Coalition to expand it.
