Whenever your pet runs away, it can be an incredibly stressful time because you don't know when they're going to come back, if ever.

That's what one family in California experienced when their beloved pet pig named Princess went missing.

This isn't some teacup pig either, this is a 181kg hog that would be tough to miss.

After searching high and low, Carrie Hogan's family's pig was found in a neighbour's yard by a police officer. The cop asked the homeowner to look after it until they could get someone from the family to identify whether the pig was theirs.

The neighbour agreed to keep a watchful eye over the animal until the owners came back. But sadly, that's not what happened.

Clearly the bloke was a bit famished and decided to turn the pig into a very hearty meal.

APD Chief Brian Ahearn has told Lost Coast Outpost: "We were totally shocked and surprised to learn that the pig had been slaughtered. There was no reason to believe that that individual was going to do that."

We don't know how many pigs are roaming around California but surely if there's a pig missing and an unidentified pig turns up nearby you'd think that would be it?

Turns out it's pretty common.

APD Lt Todd Dockweiler told SFGate: "Believe it or not, that's not a super uncommon call for us. Obviously that was a bit of a shock to everyone involved.

"Given the stage of the butchering process he was in, he must have slaughtered the pig very shortly after the officer left.'

"It's just a really bizarre case. It's just not clear what the thought process was. He obviously knew the pig didn't belong to him and he didn't have the right to slaughter it."

Carrie Hogan says her family is devastated after hearing the news their Princess had been killed.

She raised the pig and it was considered very much a part of the family.

Ms Hogan's mum tried to confront the makeshift butcher-neighbour but he told her she wasn't allowed on his property. Carrie is now trying to retrieve what's left of Princess, probably to give her a proper burial and not end up in a bacon and egg roll or a ham sandwich.

Charges are yet to be laid against the neighbour but the Daily Mail reports officers could label the incident as a 'theft of livestock' offence.
