This video shows the moment an osprey swoops over the sands in California carrying away an remarkably huge fish in its talons - with the joking suggestion made that it could have been a great white shark:

The footage was taken on Myrtle Beach, South California, by Tennessee native Ashley White. She was filming from the 17th floor of an apartment building where she was staying on holiday.

You can clearly see the fish still wriggling around trying to escape capture as the bird carries it high above the beach in its talons.

Ed Piotrowski, chief meteorologist with local media outlet WPDE, shared White's footage to his Facebook account, joking that some people thought the bird was a 'condor' and that the fish was 'a great white'.

However, he claimed that the osprey had caught a 'large Spanish mackerel'. Both the Spanish mackerel and osprey are found in the area. The birds are, according to the South Carolina Department of Natural Resources, locally known as 'fish hawks' or 'fish eagles'.

Ashley said that she and her mother were on the balcony of their condo, discussing dinner plans when 'something caught my mom's attention behind me.'

The holidaymaker said: "She pointed and said, 'Look at that bird, I believe it has a fish! Too bad I don't have my phone.' I just happened to be playing music on my phone so I turned on the camera real quick to get the video!"

Good timing.

If you thought that was impressive, you might want to stick around to check out the pictures of the eagle that was captured flying off with an unfortunate little piglet.

The photograph was taken by 75-year-old Clarke Espie in Queensland, Australia after he heard a piglet squealing and grabbed his camera.

Clarke said he was heading back to a campsite when he heard the shriek coming from the sky, he instinctively reached for his camera and could hardly believe what he was seeing as the unfortunate pig was carried off.

He said: "I had been invited to capture the unique and diverse birdlife inhabiting these world class wetlands. Little did I imagine witnessing two massive sea eagles swooping low over my vehicle, one with a feral pig firmly gripped in its powerful talons.

"Despite its powerful wings, the sea eagle struggled to gain altitude before landing its prey upon a small island within the wetlands, where together the eagles shared the prey.

"I hurriedly snapped these images with a 500mm Telephoto lens as the sea eagles swept past."
