Is there anything more heartbreaking than seeing an abandoned dog on the street? Yep there is - seeing a dog lying in dirt because his owners moved away and left him behind.

The family reportedly left their yellow Labrador on the street right opposite the house where he used to live happily.

The eight-year-old dog known as Larry survived on the generosity of passing drivers who would throw him some leftovers to eat.

Then one delivery driver made an Instagram profile dedicated to the pooch.

According to The Dodo, this helped bring Larry's story to the attention of Sasha Abelson, president of Love Leo Rescue, who reached out to local volunteers.

"As soon as we saw [the posts] we said, 'Just get the dog to us, we'll take care of the rest'," Abelson said.

Larry was taken to Los Angeles after he was saved by a delivery driver.

Volunteers noticed that the dog's stomach was bloated, despite having little access to regular meals and water for months. He was also missing patches of fur on his legs and was struggling to walk.

The Dodo reported that after a visit to the vet, it was discovered that Larry was suffering from Cushing's disease, a condition caused by a benign tumour on the pituitary gland.

After medication and adjustment time, Larry just wanted to spend time with other like minded dogs.

This allowed Larry to start searching for his furever home but Abelson said: "Not everyone wants a dog with an automatic expense attached. And he doesn't like being alone, but he's been abandoned, so we can't really blame him for that."

He's been taken to a 'forever' home on three occasions now and returned each time. Which hurts us even more.

Abelson said: "He's been so resilient, doesn't hold a grudge, and still loves people even though they've let him down in the past. He's just a happy, grateful dog. He just wants someone to take care of him and be there for him."

If you live in LA or Orange County and are interested in adopting Larry, contact Love Leo Rescue for more information.
