Back in the day, if you wanted to show your affection for your pet, you'd take them for a good walk and give them a hearty meal. Nine times out of ten that'd put a smile on their face and a wag in their tail and you could relax.

But now there are tons of ways to spoil your pet, some which are cute and adorable and others, which are just ridiculous.

We're not sure where this latest trend falls so you can decide for yourselves.

It seems there's a growing number of dog owners who are getting pedicures with their pooch so they have matching nails.

Yep - people are trying so hard to bond with their furry friends that they're willing to get identical nails. Who wouldn't want to be walking on the promenade in thongs while your rainbow nails glisten in the sun for everyone to see.

Now, if you're thinking 'omg this is the most perfect thing I've ever seen, can't wait to get Baxter some beautiful cerulean nails this weekend', you have to be wary about what polish you pick up.

You can't just grab any old polish and chuck it on your pooch's feet.

Dogsaholic says: "Nail polish designed for dogs is incredibly safe; nail polish for humans, on the other hand, is quite toxic.

"This can be a problem considering that dogs may frequently lick or chew on their nails. Nail polishes for humans contain three toxic chemicals that can make your dog extremely sick: dibutyl phthalate, toluene, formaldehyde.

"These three chemicals are extremely dangerous and represent a health risks to your dog if they're ingested. Ingestion can lead to chronic conditions such as asthma, developmental problems, and other illnesses."

So don't say you haven't been warned.

If you want to jump on this bandwagon then make sure you know what you're getting the right stuff or you could have a dead dog with gorgeous nails.
