A Liverpool man went viral after coughing up over £100 to help a student get home after she was stranded in London.

If you've ever lost your train ticket you'll know how much of a ballache it is. I remember sitting outside Manchester Piccadilly, emptying my bag on the floor in a desperate attempt to find a ticket that was in my back pocket the whole time. Such is life.

When Grace Georgina lost her return ticket from London Euston to Liverpool Lime Street - she was understandably gutted. She hoped that her Trainline app which showed the purchase, as well as her ID, collection receipt and confirmation email would be enough to allow her to get on the train, but sadly it wasn't.

She told TheLADbible: "I lost the ticket I initially thought it was unlike me, because I'm usually quite organised. I immediately thought of a solution and gathered together all of my proof and thought surely this shows I've paid for my journey already?! When told I couldn't replace it I went into panic mode as I was set to be late for an important workshop and I had deadlines to meet. My anxiety flared up and I started to cry while holding my phone to my ear as I couldn't get through to my parents."

As a student, the £159 she'd need to cough up for a replacement ticket was more than she could afford.

Out of nowhere Martin Gallagher, a nurse from Guernsey who's originally from Liverpool, approached her to ask what was going on.

"When Martin approached me, I knew I must have been so upset that I had drawn attention to myself." Grace continued. "I felt very embarrassed but he asked me what was wrong and managed to calm me down. He offered to pay and I even said the words 'don't be silly', but he very calmly insisted on it."

What an absolute lad.

"I couldn't believe what I was hearing but he walked me to the ticket office and ordered me a new single, for £159.00. I think I reacted in more of a stunned silence, where I was so overwhelmed by the kindness from a stranger that I didn't even ask for his name - hence the appeal on social media. I did give him a massive hug among more tears but ran away to make the next train."

After she got home, Grace put out a series of Tweets regarding Martin's generosity.

The Tweets got thousands of favourites and retweets, with people shocked at this stranger's generosity.

"Since it's gone viral, the responses have been so positive about Martin's generosity that morning. I didn't think that many people would read it when I rushed to write four tweets at 9am. I woke up after a nap and hundreds of people had retweeted, liked, or messaged me agreeing on the thoughtfulness of Martin's actions."

Speaking about Liverpool, Grace said: "I came to Liverpool to study in 2013 and honestly don't want to leave, it's brilliant! However I have heard a few negative whispers about Liverpool and I wanted to share my story in light of showing the side that I see to it."

If you're wondering, yes. The pair have spoken since.

She concluded: "Since finding both Mr and Mrs Gallagher, I have personally thanked him (again!) for his unbelievably kind generosity and even apologised for the publicity. I don't think either of us anticipated this but good news spreads fast, and for very good reason."
