Captain Tom Moore has been whisked off to Barbados, fulfilling a lifetime ambition by ticking off a destination on his bucket list.

The 100-year-old - who won the hearts of the nation earlier this year when he raised £33 million for the NHS by walking laps of his garden - said he didn't think he'd ever get to travel again, but that the support he's been given over the past few months has given him a 'renewed energy'.

The WWII veteran was photographed on board a British Airways plane, with a personalised headrest cover embroidered with his name.

He travelled in style, too, as he was seen smiling away in a smart black suit and white shirt.

A tweet from Moore's official Twitter account thanked British Airways and Visit Barbados for organising the trip, while another post quoted him as saying: "I never thought that, at the age of 100, I would get to travel again.

"I'm so grateful to everyone who has made this possible. The support I have been shown in 2020 has given me renewed energy and today I get to tick something off my bucket list."

Responding to the tweet, British Airways said: "Amazing to see Captain Tom! So glad we could make this happen for you and we're pleased to have you on board. Have an amazing time in Barbados! Very well deserved. Thanks for all of your efforts!"

While we don't know how long his trip will be, we do know that Moore's been able to get away with family, with another post from the airline added: "We are honoured to be flying you and your family Captain Sir Tom, to one of our favourite destinations."

Many of his fans commented to say how much he deserved the trip of a lifetime, with one person writing: "Captain Tom I don't think you really understand how much you are admired and loved by the people of this great country. Enjoy the break, you deserve it. I salute you sir. Your family also deserve some recognition, we also thank them for their efforts."

Another fan said: "Fully deserved Tom for you and your family - a beacon of light in a year when so many lights have been turned out."

A third added: "Enjoy your well earned break @captaintommoore, the world loves you so much! You inspired the nation, kept us all going! You upped [morale]! Have fun and enjoy! Oh and please build a sand castle!"
