A creative dad has managed to get his kids climbing up the walls - literally - during lockdown, having transformed his staircase into a climbers' paradise.

David Oswell wanted to make sure sons George, 12, and Eddie, 11, were getting enough physical activity during the Covid-19 pandemic, and suddenly realised he could make better use of an existing space that usually goes to waste in many homes.

David, 39, spent five days turning the area around their staircase into a bespoke, fully-functioning climbing wall, complete with more than 100 hand grips - and already it's a firm hit with his two kids.

David, whose partner is a nurse, said: "My youngest son Eddie is really into climbing and his older brother George enjoys a good go.

"So I've been collecting materials for quite some time now with the intention of building something.

"All in all about four or five days from start to finish including time for the paint to dry.

"The price wasn't so bad due to getting my hands on second-hand holds over time and a reconditioned auto belay as new ones would have been overpriced for a personal build."

David, of Northumberland, continued: "This is a first time build for me although I've been in the construction industry for many years so have the practical experience.

"This was initially a birthday present when started and rolled into a lockdown entertainment and fitness thing as it completed just in time with the closure of the local climbing walls in our area.

"I've been overwhelmed with the responses online and the kids think it's amazing having their own climbing wall."

He added: "My partner is a nurse, we live in separate houses and haven't seen each other since the wall was completed and we are locked down.

"Although I'm sure it was her and my brother who initially put the idea in my head, maybe as a joke, but with my brother's help we pulled it off."
