A six-month old baby has overcome coronavirus while also battling problems with her lungs and heart.

Adorable Erin Bates was already recovering from major surgery following issues with her heart and windpipe when she was diagnosed with covid-19.

Less than two weeks ago, tiny Erin was photographed in a high-dependency unit at Alder Hey Hospital in Liverpool where she was surrounded by machine and wearing an oxygen mask.

The family shared heart-breaking photos of Erin to encourage people to follow social distancing measures and to stay indoors.

Now, the brave little fighter has overcome the virus, her delighted family have been told.

Dad Wayne posted on Facebook to say: "Erin has beaten the virus. It hit her hard with a few ups and downs but we wanted people to know coronavirus doesn't have to be a death sentence for people with pre-existing conditions.

"She is all smiles and talking to herself."

Wayne went on to explain that Erin will remain a long-term patient, due to other medical issues, but that they are 'relived' and 'proud' of their little one and have heaped praise on the staff at Alder Hey.

Posting on Facebook, mum Emma wrote: "Our little girl has beat COVID-19. We are so proud.

"Thank you to all the staff at Alder Hey you are truly amazing."

The diagnosis was especially hard on the family as due to coronavirus rules only one parent can stay in hospital with the baby.

Emma has been with Erin while Wayne has gone back home to Bury in Greater Manchester, where he has to self-isolate due to his contact with the baby. The couple keep in contact via phone calls and Facetime.

In a statement, Alder Hey said: "You may have heard about six-month-old Erin, who is in Alder Hey after recently being diagnosed with covid-19. Erin was in an isolation room here for 14 days with mum Emma whilst being treated by our staff.

"Today, little Erin beat covid-19 after testing negative and received a guard of honour by the treating team on our HDU as she was moved out of isolation. She is still being treated for other conditions at Alder Hey but is making good progress.

"Erin's mum said of the staff who treated her: "Thank you so much to each and every one of them, we couldn't have got through it without them. They are all truly amazing and we will be forever grateful."

A family friend has set up a GoFundMe page to help the family pay their bills while Emma is unable to work due to being with Erin at the hospital. You can donate here.
