Veteran Left Speechless After Finding Out How Much His Old Watch Is Worth

He only bought the watch because someone recommended Rolex and he happened to like that one but these days he wears his 'cheap watch'

Just imagine if you bought a watch because of a recommendation from a mate and 55 years down the line you realise it's actually worth an absolute fortune?

You'd definitely be thanking your lucky stars - and the bloke who urged you to get it in the first place.

And that's exactly what happened to this LAD who appeared on the US version of Antiques Roadshow.

Time to get the drinks in, mate?

The pensioner bought the Rolex GMT Master in Germany when he was based over there in the US Army during the '60s. He paid $120 (£92). One second, 92 quid for a Rolex? Those really were the days.

He admits that back then, that was a lot of money at just over a month's salary. So fancy splashing out on a daft, expensive watch - bet he's not thinking that now.

Speaking to the valuer, Peter Planes, the owner said: "My Sergeant recommended it before I came back to the States - buy a Rolex watch.

"He thought that was the best watch ever made and he said 'make sure you get one before you go home' and this is the one I liked." Bet he likes it a lot more now.

Then he explained that before that day he had never heard of Rolex 'or seen one before' and just took his Sergeant's word that it 'was a great watch'.

When asked whether he still wears it, he said it's more of a 'keepsake' now and he wears his 'cheap watch'.

Then came the unexpected valuation from Peter who was clearly excited by what he was looking at.

He explained: "It's a GMT Master model, but it's got some very special things about it. It's the first model GMT Master that Rolex ever made."

Well I never. This guy needs to put the lottery on with his money.

He continued: "It was manufactured in the first quarter of 1960 and according to the papers of the watch you purchased it in April of 1960. You have the original sales receipt right here.

"I'm very pleased to tell you that this watch today at auction is a very, very collectable watch. Just the watch on it's own merit would be worth today between 35 and 45 thousand dollars."

Yes people, $45,000. And they're not finished there.

The valuer said: "But this watch is worth much more because you saved the box and all the paperwork for it easily today it's 65 to 75 thousand dollars in the market.

"Probably more than a month's pay in the military right now," you reckon, Peter?

The owners' reaction.

So it's worth $65,000 to $75,000 (£49k to £57k). What a nice return for a watch that cost less than £100, eh?

And the owner's reply? "I wanted more," we're only joking.

He actually said: "I'm speechless, if you would have told me $1,500 I would have been happy."

What a guy. Spend it wisely, my friend.
