Australians bloody love beer. The latest statistics suggest we collectively drank 187 million litres of pure alcohol, which is a hell of a lot of drink.

Naturally, everyone is going to have a lot of opinions on what is the best beer, wine, whiskey, vodka, etc, is.

However, thousands of people have lended their view on what is Australia's best homemade beer and the answer might surprise you.

Despite billboards, online ads and TV commercials being dominated by brands like Tooheys, VB, Carlton and XXXX, it seems like the 'old man's drink' is the best.

More than 11,000 people got involved in a poll conducted by news.com.au, and Resch's came out on top.

So that everything is transparent, the beers available for voting included Resch's, VB, Coopers (Red/Green), Furphy, Carlton, Tooheys New, Stone & Wood, Little Creatures, XXXX and James Squire One Fifty Lashes.

Many will take issue with the ones on offer, adding that something else should be in there, but there are only so many you can list before people get tired.

A whopping 25 per cent of voters backed Resch's, making it the clear winner by far.

Resch's Appreciation Society member Greg Mowbray told news.com.au the announcement was welcome: "Our group was started 10 years ago. It was at a time when availability of Resch's was declining and the craft beer movement was taking off.

"We not only love the taste of Resch's but also what the brand stands for which is simplicity, hard work and mateship.

"We want our beer to taste like just one thing - beer. Not mango, not strawberry, not perfume - just beer.

"Anecdotally, it seems to be making a comeback, with more and more venues bringing it back."

Followed behind Resch's was a tie between Stone & Wood and James Squire One Fifty Lashes on joint 12 per cent. There are definitely more pubs across Australia stocking these two on tap but, again, surprising that one of the big four didn't nab a podium spot.

Coming in at fourth was Coopers (Red/Green) with 11 per cent then Victoria Bitter nabbed fifth spot with 9 per cent of the vote.

Sixth was a tie between Carlton Draught and Little Creatures and then bringing in the rear was a joint wooden spoon with Furphy, Toohey's and XXXX.

No doubt there will be a lot of contention about this but maybe next time you're at the pub order a Resch's and see what the hype is all about.
