We all know that life is ultimately pointless and futile, that the world is going to hell and that everybody dies in the end anyway, so why not fill our short time on this planet with something fun to pass the time but which is equally pointless?

As reported a few days ago, that's what the more than 17,500 members of the Australian Facebook group Homemade McDonald's have decided to do, by attempting to faithfully recreate staple McDonald's food items in their own kitchens and sharing their recipes.

Because you know, that's obviously a lot simpler than nipping down to your local branch and buying them. Anyway, in amongst all the DIY recipes for McDonald's-style burgers and Big macs, one homemade recipe by a woman called Bernadette, is blowing everybody's minds.

She used pantry items to create her version of Chicken McNuggets - which we all know are the best things on the savoury side of the menu - as well as a replica of the famous fast food chain's trademark Sweet and Sour Sauce that she thinks could be better than the original.

If you're thinking there's no way that's possible, you can try it for yourself using her recipe, which Bernadette shared on the Facebook group. She used chicken breast triple coated in a Ziploc bag of flour, salt, vegeta (aka stock powder), garlic powder, onion powder, salt and pepper and an intermittent egg wash.

Sadly, it's a little more complex than just dumping all that stuff in a bag and shaking it around - she placed the nuggets in the freezer between the second and third coats to ensure what she termed 'crispiness a la OG' before deep-frying them in canola oil.

"Last night," she wrote on the Facebook group, "I challenged myself to create what some in this group had attempted but never seemed to nail - the iconic six pack o' nuggs and sweet and sour dipping sauce. I honestly don't think I've ever made chicken this yum before."

She rated her creation a nine out of 10 for both taste - ironically docking herself a point because the nuggets had 'too much flavour' - and size due to 'too much variation in the freckles of pepper on the coating'.

"This meant that it wasn't 100% deception," she said.

As for the sauce, she made that using apricot jam, garlic powder, onion powder, soy sauce, mustard, white wine vinegar, glucose syrup and cornstarch, and rated it an eight.

Understandably proud of her endeavours, Bernadette wrote: "So so so close to the original, dare I say it, perhaps even better. Made us both really dry in the mouth after though so lost points for thirst inducing qualities.

"Viscosity was not exact (a little too thick), and there were lil [sic] flecks of apricot that my poor hand held blitzer couldn't smoosh up. Colour was perfect though.'

"All in all, lots of success was had in the kitchen last night. There's nothing like the feeling of almost nailing a nugg - I'm on top of the world today. I'm showing all my kids at school (I'm a high school teacher) and it's giving me a new found cred."
