A six-year-old boy from Brazil has been given back his smile after losing nearly all of his teeth three years ago.

Ryan Coutinho lives with his mother in a rural area near Guajeru, a deprived town in north-eastern Brazil.

When he was just three years old, his teeth were pulled out because he showed signs of early cavities. The dramatic procedure left him almost toothless, as well as developing a new-found fear of dentists. No shit. I'm be petrified of them.

The process for getting his smile back wasn't easy, explains dentist Amanda Mattos, 25. She met Ryan two years ago during a social project at the lad's school.

"I had never seen something like this," she told the BBC.

His teacher told her that Ryan avoided smiling, which was affecting his ability to make friends.

Determined to help the boy, Amanda contacted Ryan's mother, offering the much-needed treatment.

At the time she was against her son having any more treatment on his teeth because she didn't want him to relive the agony he suffered from his previous operation.

As far as the dentist was concerned, there was nothing more she could do and respected the mother's decision.

But two years later, by complete coincidence, his mum got a job as a cleaner at the same public clinic where Amanda works.

Ryan's condition had worsened by then. When he started feeling pain in one of his remaining teeth, he visited the clinic and met her again.

"I asked him what he wanted. He smiled and said: 'a smile like my friends'," the dentist said.

Eventually the mum finally accepted the dentist's kind offer. This is the result...

Considering the town's public health service would not pay for the procedure, the selfless dentist did the whole thing for free. She used her own materials and supplies to work on improving his cheeky grin.

On October 14, Ryan's new smile, complete with a denture for his upper arch, was finally revealed.
