Ex Navy Seal Reveals The Secret To Getting Up Earlier And It's Very Simple

Sometimes, one of the hardest things to do in the day is just wake up. For whatever reason, your mind and your body just don't want to do it and so you press snooze on the alarm. Again and again and again. And again.

And then maybe you check your phone for emails and news and social media notifications while sipping on a cup of tea or coffee - or both! - and sluggishly move forward with the day as you wait for the caffeine to hit and wake you up properly.

But it doesn't have to be that way. And what's more, it shouldn't. According to ex-Navy Seal Jocko Willink, drawing out the length of time it takes for you to get up is the wrong way to do it.

During a recent interview with Business Insider to promote his new book, Discipline Equals Freedom: Field Manual, the former commander of US Navy SEAL Team 3 Task Unit Bruiser - the most highly decorated special operations unit of the Iraq War - explained that getting a slow start was a surefire way of sabotaging your morning.

Since retiring from the military, Willink has spent his time sharing leadership lessons through his books, podcast and consulting firm, Echelon Front.

"Don't think in the morning," Willink said. "That's a big mistake that people make. They wake up in the morning, and they start thinking."

What, Willink - who wakes up at 4.30am every day - does is get straight out of bed and puts on the workout clothes he prepared the night before. Has he not got Twitter on his phone?

That previous night he also makes his to-do list, so he doesn't have to waste time pondering what he will and won't do that day.

Instead, he heads straight to the gym in his garage for a workout. That way, he is able wake up his mind and body in a more intense fashion than checking his phone would ever accomplish, so by the time most people are waking up and start trying to think, he's already done with his morning routine.

"Don't think," Willink reiterated. "Just execute the plan. The plan is the alarm clock goes off, you get up, you go work out. Get some."

While I'm definitely game to give his methods a go, I might push it back a little later than 4.30am. That just seems like unnecessary punishment.
