Alcohol is a staple for some people to take the edge off after a stressful day, celebrate a birthday or simply catch up with a few mates.
However, if you enjoy a few too many pints, they can do more than just give you a terrible hangover the next day. Whether you drink wine, beer, spirits or anything in between, they've all got properties that can lead to weight gain if you're not careful.
Fitness blogger Jelly Devote has posted side-by-side comparison shots of the way she used to look before she overhauled her life.
The 27-year-old says she 'drank a lot of alcohol' and led a 'very unhealthy lifestyle' until she realised she wanted to make a change. After going overboard on her diet and exercise, she went from 70kg to 45kg and admits she was 'too skinny for her own good'.
Writing on her website, Jelly said: "Now, finally, I've found a balance where I eat the right food, make sure to exercise at least 3-6 times a week, and don't starve myself. I've honestly never felt better. To live a healthy lifestyle, it's important to eat both enough calories with essential nutrients, but also to exercise!"
The blogger adds that when she was at her heaviest, she was horribly insecure and unhappy with the way she looked.
She posts inspirational messages on her Instagram, encouraging men and women not to give up on seeking the body and lifestyle they're looking for.
"Everyone is always asking me if it's too late for them to change, it never is! Age doesn't define you," she wrote.
"My mentality is the biggest difference between these two photos. I no longer care what anyone else thinks about my looks or me at all.
"I love me, I'm enjoying life at the same time as I'm thinking about my health. I'm currently in the best state of mind I've ever been and I'm darn proud of my journey."
Jelly is also insistent on people setting goals for how they look rather than what is on the scales.
"Weight doesn't matter, you matter," she said on Instagram. "How you feel about yourself. Don't focus on a number that can fluctuate 5kg in two days."
Beers and wines can have a fair amount of sugar and carbohydrates packed into them and if you're knocking back a few of them every other night then it's easy to pack on the pounds.
But as Jelly shows, making a change can yield impressive results.
