Anyone who's older than the millennial generation cries out that the reason their younger counterparts are so entitled is because they were showered with rewards for completing tasks.

Baby Boomers say it's those mountains of certificates for participation and trophies for effort are ruining the next generation of adults.

So it should be good news for them that a primary school in Victoria has done away with all those silly rewards.

All ribbons, trophies, certificates, gold stars and other rewards have been done away with at St James' Parish School near Ballarat.

In their place, students compete against themselves.

Kids' scores, whether they be academic or sporting, are written down and the students are encouraged to better themselves each time.

Co-principal Peter Fahey said there's been a real change since the practice was brought in.

"It was like a relief. It was like this whole pressure just dissipated," Mr Fahey told the ABC. "It was an absolutely beautiful experience to see.

"In the past children competed but it was at the expense of another child. Now they all gather around and cheer each other.

"The whole focus has changed to practise, practise, practise and try your best. There's a wonderful sense of collaboration and community."

The practice is being incrementally adopted by Westmead Public School in western Sydney, where students in Year 3 to Year 6 have no end-of-year awards.

Teachers there have also swapped stickers for Post-It notes with proper feedback.
