McDonald's may not be a restaurant group renowned for its fine dining credentials, having instead won the hearts of the world over with its fast food, a bright, happy colour scheme and convenient drive-thrus.
But maybe the company's ambitions are taller than we'd first realised, because outside of the trademark glowing arches and plastic tables, there's one McDonald's restaurant that is different to the rest.
The Maccies in Freeport in Maine is housed in a 168-year-old mansion and, as you could imagine, it's a bit of a beaut.

Unlike the city centre or shopping precinct McDonald's branches, the Metro reports that this one is set in a stunning building which was built back in 1850 by William Gore, a Freeport merchant.

In wasn't until 1984 that it was turned into a McDonald's, which at the time proved to be a bit of a controversial move to local residents, who were understandably a little concerned about the building's new lease of life.
But because they kicked up such a fuss - and because Freeport has strict building design rules - the fast food giant was forced to comply with local regulations and maintain the building's uniquely regal, Victorian style.
That's right, it's out with the giant trademark golden arches and promotional posters plastered all over the windows, and in with wooden panelling, wooden chairs, plants, candles and even a formal dining room.

Speaking to the New York Times in 1984, Stephen Leroy, manager of media relations at McDonald's HQ, assured everyone that they'd be treating the branch in 'an extremely special way'.
"What we are doing there is something we probably have never done before in terms of design and the amount of time and effort involved," he said.
"We are willing to spend the money to make it compatible with the area, the history, the community and the people who live there."
And the fancy-pants vibe doesn't just apply to the building itself - you'll be happy to hear it also extends to the menu.
McDonald's menus are known to differ around the world, with regional variations allowing dishes like the McFalafel in Egypt, the McAloo Tikki in India, McRice in Indonesia, the Croque McDo in France, hamburgers in rye buns in Finland and much, much more.

And to accommodate Maine's love for lobster, at the Freeport McDonald's restaurant there's also a special menu that includes dishes like lobster rolls, which will set you back $8.99 (£6.50).
Lobster rolls in an old mansion? Maybe that'll mean taking someone out on a date to McDonald's will finally be seen as socially acceptable. We can all live in hope.
