People With Nipple Piercings Are Having Big Problems In This Weather

It's not nice.

With October having turned to November and the coldest winter in five years on the cards, you're probably beginning to remember that the drop in weather brings a variety of problems.

Public transport seems to go into hibernation, the much feared but rarely seen 'black ice' lurks at every street corner, and, as any of the men and women out there with pierced nipples can testify, seasonal chills bring a unique brand of discomfort.

As one Reddit user wrote: "I previously had one nipple pierced and I did it in January. Every time I got cold, it would hurt because of the effects cold has on that area of the body. I'm thinking of redoing it, but I like a lot of outdoor winter activities like hunting and I don't really want that being a constant distraction when its freezing out."

Truly a dilemma and a half. I'm no advice columnist but I did figured that having stumbled on the problem, it was my duty as a journalist to seek some advice for those of you going through similar issues.

So, I hit up Hayley who works for Loaded Forty Four Tattoo & Piercing Parlour in Manchester for a few answers and if it makes you feel any better, you're definitely not alone guys.

LADbible: Hi there. So nipple piercings and cold weather, not quite a marriage like Kate and Will, is it?

Hayley: Haha, not exactly but its all good, people love the way they look at the end of the day, so I guess they think it's worth it.

I imagine it's something people complain about pretty frequently.

Yeh, it's always the men as well. The women don't really whine as much.

You reckon they're just being soft then?

No! To be fair it can get pretty painful.

Is that coming from past experience?

Yeah, it is sensitive and can be quite uncomfortable in really cold weather, especially when I have been away and the temperatures have dropped into the minuses.

Shit. How come you put yourself through it?

I hate the word, but I think people think it looks sexy.

Is there not anything you can do for the pain?

I don't think so. It's just something that you can't really prevent to be honest mate but it's never anything too uncomfortable.

Not even a plaster?

Plasters can work but it won't stop the full irritation, it is like a runner using tape to stop chafing, it only works for a certain amount of time and it's not a 'cure'.

Fair enough, I guess it's a risk verse reward thing then. Cheers for that.

If you're experiencing chafing issues at the moment, you can also take comfort in knowing there's some of the science behind why nipples harden when the frost bites.

"In brief, nipples get hard for the same reason you get goose bumps on your skin," Dr. Michael Frederick told Teen Vogue.

"We have very small smooth muscles cells in our skin and around our hair follicles that contract when its cold to decrease the surface area of skin exposed to the cold.

"You will also notice that when your nipples get cold, the areola gets smaller at the same time because everything is getting tighter. This tightness then pushes out the nipple, and hence, cold weather gives you hard nipples."

If the areola gremlins are literally getting on your tits in the cold weather and you have nobody to talk to, feel free to let us know in the comments.
