Victoria Police Unveil New Tesla X Highway Patrol Car And Opinion Is Split

Some reckon it's a step in the right direction and others think it's plain stupid.

Highway police cars in Australia have typically been Holden Commodores or Ford Falcons. They're fast enough to keep up with speeding hoons that zip in and out of lanes and they're not too expensive.

But Victoria Police have unveiled the latest model to join their pack: the Tesla Model X.

It's the first all electric vehicle to join an Australian police operational fleet and it seems like the organisation is pretty chuffed with themselves for taking the lead.

Road Policing Command Assistant Commissioner Stephen Leane said: "This vehicle is unlike any other Victoria Police has ever had in its fleet and could well be the future of road policing in this state, country and the world.

"Our Highway Patrol cars are equipped with cutting edge technology and this car gives us the opportunity to investigate having these technologies in a fully integrated in-car system which has the potential of streamlining the road policing effort."

It's been liked by more than three thousand people on Facebook, but a similar number of users have flocked to the comments section to voice their views. Some have been scathing, some made jokes and others were willing to commit a crime to have a ride in one.

In the first category, we have concern, annoyance and anger for the move.

"How about spend money on something more useful," wrote one person.

"Seriously, why bother having all this technology when it can't be used because of no chase laws?" said another.

A third added: "Not sure if it's relevant perhaps the money could've been better spent actually getting more vehicles on the road to support the communities."

Some took the chance to make electric vehicle related jokes to lighten the situation.

"Thieves turning power off at police stations over night all around Vic. 'Car didn't charge overnight Sarge'," said one user.

A second joked: "Donut break just got 10 minutes longer while they wait for it to charge."

But it wasn't all anger and Debbie Downers, there were some people pleased with seeing an electric police car.

"Another great step for better quality living in Victoria. I would love to cruising around Mornington peninsula with Tesla electric power vehicle," wrote one person.

Another wrote: "That's fantastic, very forward thinking Vic Pol."

Victoria Police will be trialling the vehicle to see whether more should be ordered and whether it performs well in the field.
