Student Dodges Getting Shafted By London Rent As She Moves In With 95-Year-Old Widow

There’s 68 years between them but it’s a win-win situation as they both enjoy a night out

They are, in many ways, similar to any typical house-mates.

They split chores, share the occasional take away and - that universal sign you're living with someone who is a full legend - watch 'The Chase' together.

But there's one slight difference with Alexandra Knox and her house-share Florence Smith - one is a 27-year-old student, the other a 95-year-old RAF veteran.

The pair are believed to have the largest age gap of any house-mates in the UK - a whopping 68 years.

LOLs everywhere as Florence and Alexandra do the washing up.

"But it's no different to living with friends," insists Alexandra, who is studying for her masters degree at the Institute of Arts in London. "I was really nervous when we first met but we just hit it off.

"Flo is funny and lovely to talk to and we've become good friends. We sit down and watch TV together. We'll sit down for a chat over a cup of tea, do some of the cleaning."

Alexandra stumbled across the unusual arrangement after shunning typically expensive uni halls and sky-high London rents. Instead, she found Florence who had signed up to charity, Homeshare, after being widowed 10 years ago.

She pays a bargain £199 ($274) a month for the room in South West London. Try finding that on RightMove.

Florence served in the RAF in WWII.

And she reckons any potential concerns that the nonagenarian might cramp her style remain firmly filed under bollocks as Florence is a total LAD.

"She seems to go out more than I do," says Alexandra, originally from Newcastle. "If we have to worry about either of us having a late night, it's probably her."

It's not the first time that those seeking to avoid excessive rental prices have come up with ingenious living arrangements.

One, in Germany, gave up a flat to live full time on a commuter train (yep, seriously); while an NHS worker in Hampshire chose to reside in her family garden shed. Well, it's one way of saving up for a mortgage.

A sign of the times?

And in Alexander and Flo's case, the arrangement has proven perfect for both parties.

"Some people might feel a bit concerned about having a younger person living in their home, but Alexandra is lovely," reckons Flo, a retired social worker who has lived in the house for 50 years - almost twice as long as her house-mate has been alive. "We talk about everything, just as I would with my other friends.

"It's a bit strange to think I was already 67 when she was born, but I don't think about it that much. I have told my friends about it, and some think it's a bit strange. But the more they find out about it, the more they think it's a very good idea."
