Instagram is about to unveil a new update which will show why it continues to be one of social media's major players.

The company, which has previously demonstrated its pioneering outlook with features such as Instagram Stories, is now going one step further and allowing you and a friend to connect in live video.

From Tuesday, users will be able to go live with a friend, with further updates to include the capability to save the live video to your phone and share it on your Instagram story.

There are probably thousands of moments when you've thought about going live, only to realise it's just you and you're not sure how to take the opportunity.

Do you narrate what you're watching? Is selfie mode a little too risky? All can now be saved by having your friends and followers join the moment, while you both watch the likes and comments coming in.

Initially, only a small number of people will get the chance to experience the live video friend function but it's expected to be rolled out to everyone in the coming months.

Instagram said: "Live video helps you share in an authentic way, but sometimes it can be intimidating when you're on your own.

"It's easy to add a guest while you're broadcasting."

It's a pretty simple operation too. You simply tap the new icon that will appear in the bottom right, click add, and invite anyone who is watching.

Once you've connected up, the screen will split in two, and you'll be live together.

Also, if you got bored of their chat, you can remove them, and upload your live video if you're happy.

"Since introducing live video in November [2016], millions of people have used it to connect with friends and followers in an authentic way," Instagram added.

"Now, you can have even more fun connecting with people in the moment."

Instagram usually has a pretty good idea of what will work and what won't, and we can see this becoming pretty entertaining - there'll be some good duo videos for sure.
