You Can Buy An Entire Hamlet In Spain For Less Than A London Flat

Why not get away from it all with your very own Spanish hamlet?

Did you dream growing up that you would move to London, build a career and buy yourself a property? Have you realised the prices in the capital are too exorbitant and it will never happen? Then why not pursue a new, far more obtainable, dream? The dream of owning your very own Spanish hamlet.

The hamlets I speak of are located in Galicia, in the northwest of the country above Portugal - though they are available in many more regions too.

You could buy Xerdiz, for example, for €430,000 (£371,000) - which is obviously cheaper than a lot of properties across the UK, not just London.

That sum would buy you a total of six buildings - two of which are full restored - set among rolling hills, forests and streams, less than 10 miles from the coast.

Gather a group of mates and move to the middle of nowhere in Spain, if you want.

The listing reads: "The hamlet of Xerdiz is an ideal property for a group of people who want to adopt a quiet and self-sufficient life, close to nature."

Basically, if you and your mates have ever thought about setting up your own commune, then you might want to get on this.

About three miles away in Ourol, another hamlet is available for just €130,000 (£112,000). This one is composed of five buildings, one of which is in liveable condition.

Ten miles north of here, you could get your hands on a hamlet in Viveiro, comprised of three buildings by a river, just a couple of miles from beautiful beaches. This is also just €130,000 (£112,000), but all of the buildings need to be restored.

Your own lovely hamlet, with a great living area to boot.

The need for repairs is a recurring theme with these hamlets. They are located in what has been dubbed 'España vacía', or 'empty Spain'.

Over the past few decades, more and more people have left rural regions of the country and headed into towns and cities in pursuit of work, education and life.

The result is that villages across the country have been left completely deserted, meaning you can get your hands on a lot of property for not a lot of money. The trade-off is that the properties often need a lot of work doing; and you will of course be living a very isolated life.

But after the year we've just had, it might not seem quite so isolated by comparison. Plus, lockdown has left many of us craving the outdoors, and able to work remotely.

Perhaps buying a hamlet in Spain with your mates is the answer to all of your problems. Perhaps.
