Homeowner Receives 'Very British Complaint' From Polite Neighbour

Homeowner Receives 'Very British Complaint' From Polite Neighbour

Not only did he leave the friendly note, he even brought round a solution for the problem

A bloke received what must be the most polite letter of complaint from his neighbour who was being kept awake by his Christmas lights.

The incredibly cordial note was shared on Reddit by the man’s brother-in-law, who said it was a ‘very British complaint’.

The neighbour even included a pre-set timer, so the man could simply plug it in and get on with things.

The note read: “You will probably think this is a rather unusual note, but please accept it in the good faith that is meant.

"The enclosure is really a Christmas present - if not to yourself and your partner, then to my wife and myself!

“We are not sleeping well just now, as the flashing festive lights wake us though the night and trigger my Meniere's problems."

Meniere's is an ear condition which can cause sudden attacks of vertigo and spinning sensations, which can be triggered by flashing lights.

The letter continued: “Could you possibly use the timer, if you really don't need them on all night. I have taken the liberty of setting it to switch between about 8.30am and 11.00pm.

“Just set the pointer on the dial to the actual time when plugging it into the mains sockets. With thanks and kind wishes.”

The note has since racked up thousands of upvotes as well as attracted plenty of comments from people who are impressed by its polite tone.

One person wrote: “This is great! I live across the road from a house decked in flashing blue crimbo lights, the month of December is basically like living in an active crime scene. Fortunately my curtains are good!”

Another said: “It's so polite I would give them a gift in return. To have nice neighbours is a rare thing these days.”

While a third added: “I actually think this is kinda nice and not the typical passive aggressiveness which usually goes with British complaining.

“Man saw a problem, offered a sensible solution and hit the tone spot on with the letter.”

Someone else even suggested the man call round to his neighbour’s house with a little thank you for the timer.

“Hopefully your brother drops something nice off for his neighbours,” they wrote. “Cookies or something. As a thank you for the timer, and an apology for the loss of sleep.”

However, not everyone sided with the note-writer, as another Reddit user accused him of being ‘passive aggressive’ and reckoned the better thing to do would have been to go round and talk to them face-to-face.

Can’t please everyone, eh?
