Met Office: Warning Upgraded As More Weather Chaos Is Forecast To Hit Northern UK

Met Office: Warning Upgraded As More Weather Chaos Is Forecast To Hit Northern UK

Yet more bad news on the weather front as heavy snow and disruption is predicted across the top of England and Scotland.

It seems as if the weather this week is destined to keep getting worse and worse. After much of the country saw snow or heavy hail in the past few days, it seems as if more is on the way.

It's not just the UK either - check out these bizarre scenes as up to 16 inches of snow fell in the Algerian Sahara desert for just the third time in the last 40 years - spooky.

Back to the UK, though, and the Met Office has upgraded its warnings for certain parts of the UK as more 'persistent heavy snow' is forecast in the coming days.

Another Amber 'be prepared' alert is in place from 21:00 on Wednesday until 05:00 on Thursday. This warning covers southern Scotland and the north east of England.

This comes after hundreds of drivers spent the night in their cars on the motorway after conditions rendered travel impossible. This could happen again, according to the Met Office, so only essential journeys are advised.

Mountain rescue teams were sent to check up on those stranded in their cars to check that they had supplies and were warm enough.

Much of the problem was on the M74 through Dumfries and Galloway and Lanarkshire in southern Scotland which is thankfully moving again - just not very quickly.

The M62 motorway across the Pennines between Lancashire and Yorkshire was also hit pretty badly by the conditions, but as of this morning it has been moving again.

Loads of schools have been closed, too, especially in Northern Ireland, Scotland, and the North of England.

There is better news for those in the south of the UK, though. The Met Office has lifted the storm warning that was in effect in Cornwall overnight as it now looks like Wales and Ireland will take the main force of the storm (great news if you live there).

It said: "Strong winds will affect parts of the UK early on Thursday. The strongest winds are expected to transfer eastwards across the warning area before clearing by mid-morning

"This is an update to the warning, shrinking the yellow area and also the validity period".

The upside to all of this horrible winter weather is that you can stay warm in your home (or - if you're really unlucky - in your car) and keep a watchful eye on some of Scotland's fantastically named gritting vehicles.

You can keep track of Gritty Gritty Bang Bang, Sir Andy Flurry, Grittie McVitie, and Ready Spready Go on their live-updating map.

Or, you know, watch TV or something.
