Internet Enters Debate Mode As Theresa May Seen With Patch On Her Arm

The prime minister attended a swanky dinner with the US president last night, but what is that thing on her arm?

Is our prime minister a complete nicotine addict on the sly? Does she have an on/off button on her arm? Or is she just suffering from some extreme static cling?

Turns out that weird white patch on Theresa May's arm is there to monitor her bloody sugar levels - she's a type one diabetic.

The patch was on display for all to see last night, when she wore a sleeveless dress to a fancy dinner with Donald and Melania Trump at Blenheim Palace.

The US president is here for four days, his first visit since he was sworn into office.

Most people assumed it was an HRT patch, which slowly releases oestrogen into the body to help with the symptoms of the menopause.

It looks a bit like those plastic vents you get on an airbed, which might prompt some of the cynics among us to question whether Theresa May is actually full of hot air (insert your own 'that's politicians for you' joke here).

People on Twitter were confused by it, with one person asking, "Is that a nicotine patch on #TheresaMay's left arm? Or some sort of antihistamine because she's allergic to #Trump?"

Another person pointed out, "Anyone know why @theresa_may appears to be wearing a nicotine patch? Wouldn't have thought that this was the best time to give up the fags!"

Melania was looking pretty unhappy and bored, which also didn't go unnoticed. "Have you ever seen 4 more miserable looking people?!" someone tweeted last night. "Poor Theresa May can't even light up, she's wearing a nicotine patch. Someone pass poor Melania a stiff drink."

As ever on the Internet, the most likely answer wasn't too far away. The patch is actually believed to be a Freestyle Libre Sensor, which monitors glucose levels in the blood.

"Resent Theresa May but don't take the piss out of her patch on her arm," explained one Twitter user. "She's a diabetic. A lot of people wear them. It helps monitor glucose."

A very understanding tweet, for once, although they did follow up with: "Feel free to take the piss out of her general incompetence as PM tho, that's all fine, as you were lads." Reckon they might not be a fan.

Type 1 diabetes is a chronic condition which means that the body doesn't produce its own insulin - sufferers instead have to inject themselves with insulin several times a day.

Normally, diabetics have to test their blood by pricking their finger and testing it at least four times a day. The patch takes away all that faff, which is definitely handy if you're trying to stop your cabinet from crumbling.

The patchis available on prescription from the NHS, but it's being rolled out slowly so isn't available everywhere or for everyone yet.
