In Australia, there's a healthy bit of banter between all the states and territories, but none come as close as the rivalry between Queensland and New South Wales.

That bittersweet feud ignites every year for State of Origin and everyone gets a bit patriotic as the two states go head to head over three rugby league games. People get pretty passionate about the trilogy of matches and take any chance to wear their colours proudly.

It takes a pretty bold and brave person to wear the Maroon jersey in southern territory and vice versa, so imagine the strength of young Lachlan Palmer who decided to don a blues top at his Queensland school.

While a few jeers or sassy comments were to be expected, Lachlan wasn't planning on being suspended from school for a day.

Shortly after arriving at the Pimpama State Primary College, he was sent to head office, according to A Current Affair, where he was asked why he wasn't in school uniform.

The school kid remembers being told on Tuesday that kids were allowed to wear their jerseys to support the State of Origin on Wednesday - but apparently this wasn't the case.

Interestingly, some of the staff at the Gold Coast primary school were seen wearing Maroon jerseys on the same day Lachlan rocked up in his blues top.

His dad Dane told the Channel 9 programme: "There's teachers there with maroons, is it cause he is in blue? I think any kid, you know, especially a Blues supporter, should be able to show their colours.

"He is not confident anymore at the school and it sucks.

"Dress codes are dress codes but on sporting days follow your dreams man, you know, wear it with pride."

Queensland's Education Department said Pimpama State Primary College told A Current Affair that no student was given permission to wear a jersey on Wednesday for the State of Origin.
