It's the end of an era, guys

Well lads, today's the day. The end of an era. BBM, aka BlackBerry Messenger, has officially shut down. Gutted, aren't you? How will you keep in touch with each other?

Yes, after 13 years of service, Blackberry has closed down its instant messenger service.

You'll be familiar with the app if you used an old-school Blackberry phone, but it seems the service just couldn't compete with WhatsApp, which worked on all phones and was... well, better.

But still, its legacy will live on in our memories.

CMW, the firm that owns BBM, announced plans to shut down the app earlier this year.

In a touching statement, they wrote: "Instant messaging is a very fluid and competitive market.

"Since 2016 we have tried our best to compete in this market and launch many new features and content that we had hoped would grow the BBM user base.

"Despite all of our efforts, we found that the network effect of the market leaders is getting stronger and we have been squeezed out of user preferences."

You're killing me here, guys.

It continued: "We poured our hearts into making this a reality, and we are proud of what we have built to date.

"The technology industry, however, is very fluid, and in spite of our substantial efforts, users have moved on to other platforms, while new users proved difficult to sign on."

Fear not, though - if you still own a Blackberry, CMW have assured us that it "will not have any effect on the BBM service operating on BB10 and BBOS devices, as that service is operated by BlackBerry Limited and will continue."

Never ones to let a passing tech favourite go unmourned, people on Twitter have been sharing their fond memories:

RIP BBM. Thanks for the memories.
