LADs Make Floor Out Of 12,000 Bottle Tops

Must have been quite the sesh

It's great having your own house. Once away from the shackles of uni dorms and rented properties with a landlord who's tighter than a crab's arsehole, you can finally let your creativity take over as you personalise your gaff.

However, as most people will know, one trip to Ikea and a back-breaking session of assembling flat pack furniture and you're done. Fuck this, fuck that; this will have to do.

But once in a while a spectacular idea comes to us, and though the risk to do it might not pay off, your pad could end up looking quite sick.

Take Daniel Peart from Great Yarmouth, Norfolk, for example, who set himself the task of collecting enough bottle tops to have a very unique floor...

Better than laminate, isn't it? And he won't have to hoover this like carpet.

Daniel collected over 12,000 bottle tops to create the floor, which indicates a certain dedication to decorating his house.

"I first got idea after seeing the penny floor and began collecting them around Christmas time," Daniel told LADbible. "Obviously I didn't drink them all, although me and mates have contributed a fair few. Four or five pubs were saving them for me after I told them my plan.

"I started laying them in June so, it took six months or so to collect enough. I collected them all in a massive box and started once I guessed I had enough.

"I had over half a box left, so I think I overdid the collecting part."

Not a bad idea, to be honest. However, if you're thinking of doing this yourself, it's not as simple as it looks, nor is it an easy or quick job.

You'll really have to persevere and be patient to pull it off.

He told LADbible: "It took about 50+ hours in total. It was awful laying them, I'd done about half a day's work and it barely looked like I'd done anything.

"It was one of those jobs where you wonder why you started.

"I completely smoothed the floor so the bottle caps could sit flat, and siliconed the bottle tops to the floor, then grouted up with normal cement and black grout.

"I thought it be a good idea to try and put some glitter in the grout but as I had no experience of that before it was a 'just wing it' method to mix that in.

"Once grouted up, I polished the tops again. The last stage was the epoxy resin clear coat. I was worried about this stage as a lot of time and effort had gone into it and if I messed this up now I'd have been gutted.

"Me and my mate Bobby, after a few beers one evening, thought we'd better give it a go... Literally just mixed the resin together and poured over, gave it a quick level over and left it for the night. Job done."

Fair play. Now that it's all done, he says that it was definitely worth the effort, and that he gets a lot of comments on it - even from the postman.

"Yes,it was definitely worth the effort in the end. I was only doing the odd few hours each night after work, which is why it dragged out," he said. "Pretty much everyone has something to say about it when they see it. Even delivery guys comment on it when dropping parcels off."

Brilliant. Can anyone else's floor top this? I doubt it.
