A joke about former Prime Ministerial adviser Dominic Cummings has been voted this year's funniest Christmas cracker joke by UK TV channel Gold in its eighth annual chart.

Ok, are you ready for this one then?

What is Dominic Cummings' favourite Christmas song?

'Driving Home for Christmas'.

So, it's not exactly a side-splitter, but then - if we're being honest - neither are a whole load of cracker jokes. They're supposed to be bad, that's the point of them.

This year, get ready to see a whole load of coronavirus jokes making it into the Christmas dinner cringe-fest.

Have you heard the one about the deadly global pandemic?

Jokes about self-isolation, the year 2020, and infection rates are set to be commonplace, if the list is anything to be believed.

The annual joke rankings are made by 2,000 voters and put to a panel chaired by comedy critic Bruce Dessau.

Speaking about the list, Dessau said that even during one of the 'strangest and most turbulent years yet, we can always rely on British humour to pull us through'.

Well, you can be the judge of that. See what you make of the whole top ten.

  1. What is Dominic Cummings' favourite Christmas song? 'Driving Home for Christmas'.
  2. Did you hear that production was down at Santa's workshop? Many of his workers have had to Elf isolate!
  3. Why didn't Mary and Joseph make it to Bethlehem? All Virgin flights were cancelled.
  4. Why are Santa's reindeer allowed to travel on Christmas Eve? They have herd immunity.
  5. Why did the pirates have to go into lockdown? Because the 'arrrr!' rate had risen.
  6. Why is it best to think of 2020 like a panto? Because eventually, it's behind you.
  7. Why couldn't Mary and Joseph join their work conference call? Because there was no Zoom at the inn.
  8. Why can't Boris Johnson make his Christmas cake until the last minute? He doesn't know how many tiers it should have.
  9. What do the Trumps do for Christmas dinner? They put on a super spread.
  10. Which Christmas film was 30 years ahead of its time? Home Alone.
They do say that laughter is the best medicine.

As you can see, there are some real mirth-makers there. At least, your dad will probably love them all.

Whether or not Dominic Cummings will be fond of the jokes made about him around his Christmas table this year is anyone's guess.

Either way, the tiny pieces of paper the jokes are written on might be too small for him to read. We know how troublesome his eyesight has been.
