Community Bands Together To Celebrate Homeless Man’s Birthday

His last birthday was spent alone and in tears.

Some people might walk past dozens of homeless people every day and not know their story of where they're from, how they got there or even how they're feeling. Most of us would never know if it's that displaced person's birthday because we never have the time to find out.

But one British community decided to make sure that Steve wouldn't spend his 46th birthday without some well-wishers. The homeless man is usually spotted at a phone booth in Manchester with his dog Tyson and not much else.

So some people organised a cake, brownies, balloons and even some gifts and cards for Steve to celebrate his big day. Shalva Moussa got everything together, telling the Manchester Evening News: "A few months ago, we were talking - I always get him something, food or a hot drink - and he told me he'd never had a proper birthday party and couldn't remember the last time he'd celebrated with anyone.

"He told me he'd find a candle for himself from somewhere, light it and blow it out. Last year he spent it alone in tears.

"The vision of that broke my heart, I was determined to not let that happen this year, so I asked him when his birthday was and put it in my diary."

She says Steve was so overwhelmed by the offering, adding that it was an honour to make he feel good on his birthday. Others have praised Shalva for going out of her way, with one person writing: "Well done Shalva. He's a human being and deserves to be treated as one."

Another wrote: "I see this man and his dog all the time in Cheetham Hill...unlike others he never begs for a thing and is always polite to everyone. Such a lovely thing to do for him."

Another person has been so inspired by this Good Samaritan's work that he has started a GoFundMe page to hopefully get enough cash to provide Steve a place to stay over Christmas.

The post says: "Please donate, and all monies will go towards finding a Steve a permanent home, or at least a roof over his head for as long as the money lasts for the cold Xmas period!"

They're hoping to get about £1,000 together in time so that the 46-year-old isn't left with nowhere to go on Christmas. No one should have to be outside and alone on that day.
