The distance from Glasgow in Scotland to Málaga in Spain is around 1,700 miles. If you travel from Glasgow to Dundee you'd be covering just over 80 miles.

So it's remarkable that one man found a flight to Málaga that was cheaper than the train ticket he'd purchased to take him to Dundee.

Tam Wilson shared the discovery on Twitter on Friday 14 May, writing: "Off peak return from Glasgow to Dundee is more expensive that a round trip from Glasgow to Malaga.

"Aye. Sound mate. Nae bother."

He also posted a picture of his train ticket, with a cost of £40.50, alongside a listing for a Ryanair return flight from Glasgow to Malaga, which was priced at £35.

Yes, we all know that the plane ticket is much less flexible and is booked weeks in advance as opposed to Tam's walk-up train ticket, but he's just highlighting that the price is pretty high.

Another Twitter user called out Tam about the 'misleading' tweet, however, saying: "Plane ticket prices you've quoted are for travel weeks ahead. Plane tickets for tomorrow are several hundred pounds. Cheapest advance rail tickets for mid June are around £22."

But yet another person was quick to respond, writing: "So for an extra £13 I could go to Malaga instead of Dundee? Don't know about you but that still sounds fundamentally wrong to me..."

Jumping to Tam's defence, a third person wrote: "I can't believe folk are trying to say you're on the wind up for using plane tickets that are priced in advance when it's f***ing £40 from Dundee to Glasgow. Have a day aff."

Sharing their own experience with hefty train prices, another user commented: "I remember hearing a story a few years ago.

"2 friends from Uni wanted to meet over a bank holiday weekend. 1 stayed in Aberdeen, the other in Edinburgh.

"It was cheaper for both to get return flights to Barcelona & book 2 nights accommodation than it was for 1 return train ticket."

Ultimately, though, it seemed most people understood the point Tam was trying to make.

Giving a little nugget of advice, one person said: "You need to buy Glasgow to Perth then Perth Dundee: half the price and you don't even need to change trains."

Well, there we go - maybe there's a solution.
