A homeless man, given money by visitors who flocked to the Manchester Arena bombing memorial site, has decided to spend the cash on flowers to show his respects instead of buying himself food.

Kind-hearted Tommy saw the growing number of flowers, balloons and messages left in tribute to the 22 who died in the horrendous attack last month.

Due to the influx of visitors to the memorial site in St Ann's Square, Manchester, Tommy has been handed cash by generous people, who want to help out.

However, rather than spending money on himself, Tommy has instead chosen to use the cash to buy flowers, reports the Manchester Evening News.

The day after the bombing, a stranger handed Tommy a fiver, which he instantly spent on flowers. Since then, he's bought six more bunches of flowers, spending around £40 in total.

He said: "I've been here since the beginning, since the first flowers were left, and watched it grow.

"A lot of people in this area have done a lot for me so it's a tribute to the people that have given me the money as well.

"I've done what I can for the community in my own way."

Tommy, who didn't want the paper to reveal his second name, is a regular visitor to both the site and St Ann's church, where he's a member. Parishioners at the church rushed to heap praise on Tommy for his actions.

Tommy told the paper he wanted to help in any way he could, and even rushed to the Manchester Arena on the night of the attack to see if he could help.

He told the MEN: "I've lost a lot of people in my life but a tragedy like this has hit me personally.

"For something like this to happen, for someone to be able to go that far and take innocent people, children - I just don't get it."

Tommy isn't the first homeless man in Manchester to make headlines for his selflessness. Chris Parker was hailed a hero after he ran into the arena to try and help children.

Steve Jones was also at the scene, offering help. He told ITN: "Just because I'm homeless doesn't mean that I've not got a heart. I'm human still."

As a result of his actions, Steven has been offered several interviews for work and places to stay.
