Man Invites 'Dad' To Family Group Chat, Turns Out To Be Random Bloke

'Peter' was in the chat for six months and read every single message that was put in the group

If you've ever been accidentally added into a group chat, you'll know there's a huge amount of awkwardness when it comes to saying something to the other members - should you point out the error, leave silently, or simply go along with whatever's going on in the conversation?

Peter the plumber had a similar experience when an unsuspecting family added him into their WhatsApp chat by mistake.

He decided to go for the latter approach, which meant the family went six months thinking they were being ignored by their dad - only to later realise they'd added the wrong bloke.

The whole story came to light courtesy of Jonno Hopkins, who recently tweeted to explain that his family don't usually communicate so he was over the moon to have a group chat set up.

But it soon became apparent that the man he thought was his dad Peter was not engaging in conversations.

Jonno wrote on Twitter: "On calls my dad would ask what's going with stuff, to which I'd say 'Dad, you're in the whatsapp group, YOU'RE READING THE MESSAGES!'

"He'd say 'Am I?' and I just put it down to him being old."

Then Jonno went on to explain: "I'm not sure why, when setting up the group, I didn't add 'Dad' and not 'Peter'. But now I feel bad for fake dad Peter and hope he enjoyed reading my mum's messages about how she'd thought Coldplay's album was called 'A Cold Hard Blow To The Head'."

Jonno, a writer, went on to say how he believes the debacle could have continued for 'years', but thankfully it was his sister that noticed the error and asked him to add their actual dad into the WhatsApp group.

He explained: "It dawned on me that the number of the Peter in the group was not my dad's number."

Peter reads all the messages.

So, who is fake dad Peter? Well it turns out he's a plumber who arrived at Jonno's flat to repair a washing machine - in DECEMBER 2013.

Whoops.

Jonno added: "I guess after a while the moment for fake dad Peter to pipe up to let us know we'd got the wrong Peter had passed so he just accepted his role as our new dad."

A tale as old as time.
