Mum Left In Agony After Lip 'Exploded' Due To Dodgy Fillers

Gemma Palmer paid £180 and had her lips injected with a millilitre of filler

A mum was left in agony when her top lip 'exploded' five times after she had fillers.

Gemma Palmer, 35, went to a local beautician and paid £180 ($227) to have her lips injected with a full millilitre of lip filler - which is double her usual dose.

But bizarrely, the liquid gathered together on the right side of her top lip, leaving her lopsided, with a swollen and painful mouth.

This wasn't the look Gemma was going for.

She had it dissolved and she was pain free for eight months - until her lip became hot and painful, doubled in size and then burst - five times.

Support worker Gemma said experts have told her they reckon lip filler is still trapped inside her face - a full two years after she had them done.

The mum-of-one from Litherland, Lancashire, is awaiting specialist treatment to have it removed, and it warning other women of the dangers of fillers.

Gemma is now trying to warn others.

Gemma said: "It was horrific, I was in so much pain both physically and mentally. My lip made me cry and I was so upset both before and after my lip exploded as the pain and the swelling affected my everyday life.

"I was really scared and worried when my lip exploded - I was so anxious that it could leave me disfigured life. I felt so embarrassed and ashamed to leave my house and also embarrassed to tell people what exactly had happened.

"All together, I've had about six weeks off of work because of the lip filler problems."

Gemma had previously had half a millilitre of lip filler injected in August 2017 with no problems. Missing her plumped pout, she had her lips injected again in October 2018, this time with a full millilitre of filler - and disastrous consequences.

One week after her injection, Gemma's lip was so swollen and painful that she couldn't eat anything but soup and after being unable to massage the filler out of her lip, she was forced to eventually have her filler dissolved.

The clump in her lip was finally gone and Gemma returned to normal life but eight months later, her lip grew hot and swollen again in July 2019.

Gemma said: "I was at home cleaning when I felt a burning sensation and throbbing in my lip. I knew it was about to flare up again but hoped it would be ok by the morning - how wrong I was.

"I woke up and my lip had swollen up so much that I could hardly speak. It carried on swelling over the next couple of days until it finally popped open which was both disgusting and extremely painful."

Gemma visited her local GP surgery but despite telling them about her previous problems with lip fillers, her issue was dismissed as a cold sore.

Sent home with anti viral tablets, Gemma's lip slowly cleared up over the next few weeks but she's had the same problem come back every few months.

She has now suffered with her lip swelling and exploding five times - most recently in March this year. Gemma said: "The pain gets more extreme every time and this time round has definitely been the worst.

"My whole mouth filled with blisters from the swelling which kept popping and filling my entire mouth with blood. I couldn't eat, I was in constant pain."

Tired of being dismissed by doctors she visited a private cosmetic surgery expert who finally told her why it was happening.

"She told me straight away that there was still lip filler trapped inside my top lip two years after I got injected," she said.

"She will be putting a dissolvant in my lip and then I'll be on antibiotics for a week and hopefully this will be the last time it happens.

"I've been in agony for two years because of these problems and I just want other girls to know the danger of lip fillers before they go ahead and get injected. I do feel deep regret and I wish I had never had them done."
