Birds Eye has launched a competition to find a new Captain Birds Eye to go on its fish finger boxes - and Bootlegger has put himself forward for the role.

The Pilsner-loving viral sensation - known to his 235,500 followers as 'The Captain' - reckons he is just the man for the job, and with your support, his face could be coming to a freezer near you soon.

Bootlegger has backed himself to be the new Captain Birds Eye.

The competition has been launched in partnership with Iceland supermarket and the winner will appear on thousands of Birds Eye Fish Fingers boxes across the UK later this year.

To replace the captain of battered fish, the company is looking for a 'frozen food hero' who uses frozen food to 'create delicious meals, save money and reduce household food waste'. However, Bootlegger's status as The Captain should surely take precedence over this criteria and position him as the front runner.

Speaking to LADbible about why he should be the new Captain Birds Eye, the 45-year-old - whose real name is Karl Phillips - said: "I am The Captain, after all. I look a bit like a cod after a few pilsners, so why not?"

Tasty, baby.

Now it's over to The Captain's comrades to make this happen. You can nominate him as the new Captain Birds Eye here and hopefully the judges will see sense and pick him for the part. Unfortunately it's not being put to a vote, though, so we're relying on Birds Eye and Iceland to honour the will of the people when the winner is chosen.

Make this happen.

When asked about Bootlegger's bid to be the new Captain Birds Eye, an Iceland spokesperson told LADbible: "We're happy to see the competition already reeling in hundreds of entries, and any captain is welcome on the good ship Iceland."

If he wins, The Captain will appear on limited-edition packs of fish fingers and will claim a £100 shopping voucher to spend at Iceland and a year's supply of fish fingers.

Here's hoping this is the start of something beautiful, with pilsner-battered fish fingers coming to freezers by 2021.

In the meantime, you can get mugs, coasters and more bearing the Welshman's face from his merchandise page. He's also working on brewing his own beer, naturally, so expect the working man's kettle/draft beer dispenser to be doing plenty of pouring in the coming year.
