Chris Evans and Ryan Reynolds are both well known for portraying superheroes on screen, but after a plea was launched on Twitter to help a little boy's dying wish come true, they and others put their powers into action in the real world to make it happen.

It all began when Fox News presenter Shannon Bream tweeted a message, asking for help from the Avengers to give terminally ill Emilio a greeting:

Thousands of followers retweeted the plea for help, quickly sending it viral and as a result, a few hours later Captain America himself - or Chris Evans, at least - tweeted a response:

Evans' message of support was closely followed by one from Ryan Reynolds who plays Deadpool:

After that, it wasn't long until the superheroes were piling in to offer a helping hand.

Agents Of S.H.I.E.L.D actress Chloe Bennet also implied she planned to send a message herself.

It wasn't limited to stars of the Marvel franchise either, as Zachery Levi - star of DC's upcoming Shazam! Movie - also piped up.

He wrote: "I'm not technically an Avenger, but I'd be happy to record a video for the little man and do my best impressions of @ChrisEvans @prattprattpratt @chrishemsworth or any other Chris if necessary. Where can I/we send these messages, and what's his name?!"

After seeing the response from the celebs, fans began to flood Twitter with joyful messages, amazed at how the power of social media was able to mobilise the Hollywood stars to come to the aid of a sick child.

"It's making me cry how so many people are trying to help. There's still hope for the world," said one commenter.

And while it's true that the celebrities who came forward may not all be Avengers, there's no denying that they're all superheroes, both on screen and off.

Meanwhile, Evans has suggested the the forthcoming movie Avengers: Infinity War may represent one of his final outings as part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Having first signed up for Captain America: The First Avenger, which was released in 2011, the new film represents his seventh time carrying the shield, with Evans and crew currently filming reshoots for the fourth, as-yet-untitled Avengers movie.

However, in an interview with the New York Times, Evans confirmed he had no plans to return to the franchise after that, adding: "You want to get off the train before they push you off."
