It's one of the most awkward parts of having a birthday: everyone singing and cheering as a cake with a bunch of candles is presented to you and you have to sit there during the whole song and smile.

Do you sing along, do you film everything, do you just sit there and wait to blow out the candles? Some people love the whole shebang but others cringe at the intense moment of attention.

Well former US Presidential Republican candidate Mitt Romney has baffled the internet after a video was posted showing him receive a birthday cake.

His staff brought his Twinkie cake into the room, much to his surprise and delight. They did the usual 'Happy Birthday' tune and plopped it on the table. After thanking everyone for their efforts, Mitt picked up each individual candle and blew them out.

Thankfully there weren't 72 candles on the cake otherwise everyone would've been there for a while.

But still, you can hear people awkwardly giggling as Mitt takes care to blow out. each. individual. candle.

People on social media were understandably confused.

"On one hand, I did NOT expect the one-by-one candle-picking/blowing, but on the other hand, it was weirdly polite (no blow-out spit all over a cake other ppl have to eat)," wrote one person.

Another said: "This is the most bizarre technique for blowing out birthday candles that I've ever witnessed. Mitt Romney is a deeply weird dude."

A third wrote: "When I saw Mitt Romney blowing out the candles on his Twinkie cake individually, all I could think was 'he's lucky there are bigger things going on in the news today'."

Other people thought it was good because it's hygienic.

"Love the fact you did not blow out the candles all at once. Thoughtful and hygienic. Happy Birthday!" said someone on Twitter.

Another added: "Senator Romney, those of us in public health appreciate your candle-blowing technique. Spread joy not germs!"

TMZ managed to track down the politician and asked him about the bizarre candle blowing method. He said: "I have a bit of a cold and I didn't want to spray my germs all over the Twinkies for everybody else to eat!"

Romney also added that he was able to get a new wish for each candle instead of just the usual one.

Weird flex but okay.
