Kids of the digital age are practically glued to their smartphones and tablets. They'd much rather sit indoors watching endless YouTube videos of other people playing Minecraft than even consider the idea of going outside into the daylight and interacting with other human beings.

However, the youth's scary relationship with tech doesn't come without its benefits. The principal one being that it makes punishing them for misbehaving very, very easy.

Hit their sibling? No iPad for the rest of the evening. Bad report from school? No internet for a week. Doling out justice has never been so easy or effective for parents. But things can still go wrong.

That's what one American mum discovered when she decided to limit her kids' access to their devices in order to help them sleep better at night.

Mum of four Michelle Giggler took away her children's phones and tablets to ensure they weren't awake and playing on them at ungodly hours of the night/morning, but they weren't exactly pleased with their mum's bright idea.

In order to teach her a lesson, the tech-savvy youngsters hatched a cunning plot to make their mother regret ever leaving them without their precious gadgets, as Michelle revealed in a post on Twitter.

Yes, Michelle's resourceful kids managed to find a way to exploit one of the most tried and tested means of getting children to behave in modern times, forcing their mum to resort to more primitive methods of punishment.

Michelle, who works as a farmer and teacher, was catapulted to viral stardom and the likes and comments have been flowing in ever since.

Naturally, though, not everyone aggress with her parenting methods and many were quick to weigh in with their opinions on the matter.

"Imagine having a parent this uptight.. my mom used to text me stuff at night when she'd remember something and didn't wanna get up," said one commenter.

"Why waste money purchasing them if you can't even trust their judgment with them without you supervising?" said another Twitter user, who most likely doesn't have children.

But Michelle hit back, saying: "Because they're kids and they need boundaries. By me giving parameters they're more likely to use these devices correctly when I'm not around to supervise.

"I teach high school. I see the sleep deprived faces lately of kids on their phones all night."
