Picture Of Newborn Baby Holding Mum's Failed Coil Goes Viral

The obstetrician thinks the coil may have been dislodged, rendering it ineffective

A picture of a newborn baby boy holding his mum's patently failed coil has gone viral.

The 34-year-old mum - who already has two other kids - had the intrauterine device (IUD) inserted two years ago. However, the coil did not do its job and she became pregnant, giving birth at Hai Phong International Hospital, in Hai Phong, Vietnam.

During labour, the IUD came out along with the baby, who subsequently gripped it in his hand.

The IUD did not work. Clearly.

Tran Viet Phuong, an obstetrician at the hospital, noticed the striking development and took a picture which was shared last week on the hospital's social media channels, where it received thousands of likes, comments and shares.

Phuong said: "After delivery, I thought him holding the device was interesting, so I took a picture. I never thought it would receive so much attention."

Coils are supposed to prevent sperm from being able to fertilise a woman's eggs by releasing copper or hormones after being inserted into the uterus, but Phuong said the mother's IUD may have been dislodged from its original position, rendering it ineffective.

Clearly, this was not the outcome the mum had envisaged when she got the IUD fitted, but she is presumably now relieved her son was born healthy, weighing 7lbs.

The baby was born healthy.

But while this baby was seemingly determined to join the human race, a baby born in Brazil earlier this year seemed less than chuffed to join us.

Photographer Rodrigo Kunstmann was on hand to capture the moment Isabela Pereira de Jesus was born via caesarean section in a hospital in Rio de Janeiro on the afternoon of Thursday 13 February.

Typically, babies arrive screaming and wailing, and if they're not, then doctors will prompt them to so they know their lungs are working properly. Baby Isabela was having none of it though, appearing to angrily stare down the obstetrician - instantly becoming a meme in the process.

Rodrigo shared the brilliant snap on Facebook and it went viral, making headlines across the globe.

Speaking to Brazilian publication Crescer, Rodrigo said: "She opened her eyes wide and didn't cry, she made a 'sulky' face, her mother gave a kiss and it was only after they cut the umbilical cord that she started to cry.

"When I posted it, I thought it would have the potential to become a meme, but it's always a matter of luck."
