Pregnant Aussie Firefighter Hits Back At Critics Saying She Shouldn't Be Fighting Bushfires

Pregnant Aussie Firefighter Hits Back At Critics Saying She Shouldn't Be Fighting Bushfires

"I’m not the first pregnant firefighter and I guarantee you I'm not the last."

There are hundreds of dedicated firefighters, both volunteer and full-time, battling blazes around Australia at the moment.

Four people have died, hundreds of animals have been 'incinerated' and dozens of homes have been destroyed. But crews have been working around the clock trying to ensure that nothing more is lost to these raging infernos.

You'd think that firies would want as many people as possible so that they can battle blazes on as many fronts as possible.

However, one Aussie firefighter has drawn criticism from people because she's pregnant.

Kat Robinson Williams uploaded a post of her dressed in her full firefighter's uniform explaining why she was helping out her community while pregnant.

She wrote on Instagram: "For all the females on the ground inNSW right now. We stand together we stand proud !! Yes I am a Firefighter. No I'm not a man. Yes I am a female. Yes I am pregnant. Yes I am going to the fires. And yes I'll be alright. No I won't just stay behind. No I don't care if you don't like it.

"THIS IS MY STATE IN FLAMES! I love my country I love my mates. And if that means I'm needed on the ground. Then I'll always make the way. As long as I am physically able to help. I'll always work my best. As I'm a firefighter, just like all the rest."

Ms Robinson has been a volunteer with the Rural Fire Service for the past decade, despite being just 23-years-old.

She got involved with the service after seeing her grandmother, mother, uncle, father and brother become volunteers.

Ms Robinson Williams understands that while she is 13 weeks pregnant, she won't let that get in the way of helping her community.

"It's been pretty full on this last week-and-a-half. We've been pushed to our limits," Robinson-Williams told NBC.

"My community needs me. I'm not going to sit back and watch it go up in flames. It's not who I am to do that when I know I can help."

She's been wearing the necessary personal protective gear, including a mask to prevent smoke inhalation, which will protect her and her baby from the effects of the bushfire.

New South Wales is currently in the middle of a State of Emergency as firefighters try to get dozens of fires extinguished or under control. It's people like Kat who are helping this mission.
