Tarantula-topped treat available for a short time, and apparently tastes slightly metallic. Sign us up...

Burgers have gone massive in recent years. There was a time when the burger required little more than bread, meat and cheese and we were happy to get the option of a slice of bacon or a bit of onion.

Now, burgers have to be loaded to the ceiling, with a huge set of ingredients and a height that absolutely, completely guarantees that you can't fit the whole thing in your mouth. We've all lost the plot is what I'm trying to say.

Bearing this in mind, there is always someone willing to take an Instagram idea too far, bearing in mind that everything in America just has to be bigger and more outlandish, we present to you the tarantula burger. That's right: a burger, topped with a big hairy spider.

The geniuses behind this are to be found at Bull City Burger and Brewery in the city of Raleigh, North Carolina, and they're unreasonably proud of the idea of putting an arachnid on their burgers.

"People say it tastes most like crab, or other shellfish, sometimes with a bit of a metallic-y taste. But, the legs, the body...each bite tastes a bit different," said a spokesman to the Daily Mirror.

Of course, these things are not done because it tastes good or is a fun idea, they're done to raise hackles on the internet, and in that regard, they are successful.

Not just anyone can try the tarantula burger: they must enter a raffle and be drawn out - a process that costs $30 before they've eaten a bite.

If they manage to munch all 8 legs, they get a t-shirt so that everyone knows which person at the party not to speak to. Four people have been stupid enough to eat the spider so far, and I'm sure they're all very proud of themselves.

The arachnid in question is a zebra tarantula, found in Costa Rica and Central America. The restaurant has just 18 of them, so if you're thick and would like to prove it, then get there quick.

Alongside the spider burger, there are other exotic, and potentially edible, treats available: alligator (which I've had and is nice), as well as iguana, snake, turtle and a whole range of other insects.
