A woman has shared a brilliant prank her mum played on her dad years after her death.

Antonia Nicol took to Twitter to share the touching story of her mum Phendre making her husband Nigel promise to look after her plants before she died in November 2013.

Dutifully, Nigel kept his word and continued to water the plants for years. In fact, Nigel was so impressed with his green-fingered skills, that when he was moving house, he decided to pack the, incredibly healthy looking, plants and take them with him.

It was only then that he discovered that they were actually plastic.

Yup. Nigel had been carefully caring for and looking after a bunch of plastic plants.

Sharing the story on Twitter, Antonia used a stock image of plant, writing: "Before my mum passed away, she gave my dad strict instructions to water the plants in the bathroom. He's been religiously watering them & keeping them alive. They look so amazing he decided to take them to his new home, only to discover they are plastic! Can hear my mum chuckling."

She followed her original tweet with a photo of her dad re-enacting his water can skills with some ferns:

Antonia's post quickly went viral and has been liked over 117,000 times and shared 35,000 times.

It's also been flooded with comments from people praising her mum's cheeky sense of humour.

Antonia told indy100: "She'd fought cancer for five years but it beat her in the end in November 2013. My parents live in South Africa whilst I live here, so it was a very difficult time for us all.

"When my dad found out that he'd been watering plastic plants for years, it was so funny for all of us and made us feel like she was still with us."

She added: "My dad has been overwhelmed by the level of interest and so have I. It's so lovely to hear my friends and family talking and remembering my mum again. She would have loved this so much."
