Man Launches Crowdfunder To Send Flat Earther To Space To Prove Them Wrong

He hopes that by proving it to one 'high profile' Flat Earther he'll be able to convince more inside the movement

A man has launched a crowdfunding campaign to send a Flat Earther into space to show them the planet is spherical.

Marc Gauld, from Scotland, reckons that if a Flat Earther could see Earth from space they would be able to come back down and start convincing their fellow believers they've been wrong all along.

Speaking to the Daily Record, Gauld said: "I have a couple of friends that are Flat Earthers and it drives me crazy, their total nonsense that they speak.

"They call astronauts actors who are paid to lie and that boils my blood because these are guys who barely hold down jobs and do nothing so to talk about astronauts like that I don't know where they get off."

The campaign has a somewhat ambitious £250,000 ($340,000) target - and up to now has managed to attract just £75 ($100) in donations, but you've got to start somewhere, haven't you?

Gauld, a 37-year-old oil worker, says he expects a large portion of the funds would come from Flat Earthers themselves who are keen to prove their beliefs.

He's already reached out to both Elon Musk and Richard Branson about the possibility of buying a seat aboard either a SpaceX or Virgin Galactic flight for the lucky Flat Earther who is chosen to be sent into space.

When it comes to choosing who will be blasting off into space, Gauld told the paper he will open up applications once funding is secured for 'high-ranking Flat Earthers' to make their case for why they ought to go.

On his GoFundMe page, Gauld writes: "This campaign is to prove to Flat Earthers once and for all that the earth is round!

"It currently takes $250,000 to secure a seat on a Virgin Galactic flight to enter the Earth's orbit.

"If Flat Earthers truly want to prove flat earth then I would expect most donations to come from the Flat Earthers community.

"The first flights are planned for this year but may be held back due to the Covid pandemic but I hope to have a Flat Earther in space within the next couple years.

"Once the funds are raised I will hold an application process for high-ranking Flat Earthers to enter if they wish to be the first Flat Earthers in space!

"One lucky Flat Earther will be chosen for disappointing the rest of the Flat Earthers.

"Please get onboard with this as it is in the name of science and it will finally disprove or prove the Flat Earth theory and we can finally put this to rest!

"I am 100 percent serious about this and your donations will be highly appreciated and will be helping to stop a completely unsupported scientific view getting in the way of real progress!

"Thanks to all who donate I will make this happen."
