Brendan Fraser's fans have never understood why he suddenly vanished from Hollywood at the top of his game. Now that he's making a comeback, we're here to tell you what he's been doing over the last decade.
During the 1990s and early noughties, Fraser dominated Hollywood with his leading and iconic roles in George of the Jungle, The Mummy trilogy, and Bedazzled (to name just a few).
In January 2021, it was announced that Fraser would be making a comeback with a starring role in The Whale. Ahead of its release, Fraser has recently spoken about why he's been ghosting the film industry for all of these years.
What happened to Brendan Fraser?
A combination of multiple surgeries, a divorce, and losing his mother have kept Fraser from the movie business for the best part of a decade.
He told GQ in 2018 that by the time the third The Mummy film was being made in 2008, he "was put together with tape and ice." All of the stunts he'd performed over the years had taken a toll on his body, and he was in and out of hospital having surgery for seven years.
"I felt like the horse from Animal Farm, whose job it was to work and work and work.
"Orwell wrote a character who was, I think, the proletariat. He worked for the good of the whole, he didn't ask questions, he didn't make trouble until it killed him....
"I don't know if I've been sent to the glue factory, but I've felt like I've had to rebuild s**t that I've built that got knocked down and do it again for the good of everyone. Whether it hurts you or not."
As well as his declining health, Fraser also went through a nasty divorce in 2009 and in 2016, days before he was due to give his first press interview in years, his mother lost her battle with cancer.
Where is Brendan Fraser now?
In August 2021, Fraser appeared to be overwhelmed by the huge support he's received from fans ahead of his Hollywood comeback.
It was during a virtual fan meet-and-greet on TikTok with a fan, he was told: "the internet is so behind you!"
"The internet is so behind you! We're so supportive," said @LittleLottieCosplay, whose meet-and-greet with the star went viral. "There are so many people out there who love you, and we're rooting for you, and we can't wait to see what you do next."
Fraser's comeback has been dubbed the "Brenaissance" by fans, who can't wait to see him at the front and centre of The Whale and KIllers of the Flower Moon in the coming months.
