Dua Saleh makes their acting debut in Sex Education season three, which comes out later this week.
They're a Sudanese-American singer-songwriter who's been cast to play non-binary student Cal, in the latest instalment of the comedy-drama from Netflix.
Who is Dua Saleh?
Due Saleh is a Sudanese-American singer-songwriter, recording artist, poet and actor based in Minneapolis, Minnesota, US.
Dua moved to the US from Sudan with their family as a refugee and started experimenting with music while studying at Augsburg University, where they majored in gender, women's, and sexuality studies and sociology.
Dua has two EPs - Nūr (2019) and Rosetta (2020).
What is Dua Saleh's gender and what are their pronouns?
Due Saleh is trans and reportedly came out as non-binary during their second year at University. Their pronouns are they/them, he/him and xe/xyr.
Saleh's own experience of being a non-binary student themselves in America makes them the perfect person to play Cal in Sex Education season three.
"Cal is an American teenager and they're non-binary. They're a skater, a stoner, and they have a lot of anxiety, but they hide it well," they told Gay Times.
"Cal has issues with the new headmistress of Moordale (Hope, portrayed by Jemima Kirke), who was a former student, and tries to shift things so that they're this weird, bureaucratic, dystopian reality of fascism," they added.
"Hope has a hard-on for the British Dream, not the American Dream, but the British understanding of propriety, and what a good student needs to be and what a good school is. Cal also starts forming new friendships with some main characters."
Dua speaks highly of the show's producers, who made sure they felt comfortable and the show was highlighting LGBTQ+ issues accurately.
"We had non-binary consultants and non-binary people in the writing rooms who talked to me," they told Gay Times. "We had an intimacy coordinator and a non-binary consultant to ask us questions that a cis person wouldn't necessarily ask."
When is Dua Saleh's birthday?
Dua Saleh's birthday isn't known, but it's reported that they are 26-years-old in 2021.
Dua was born in Kassala, Sudan and their family .
