Timothee Chalamet's highly anticipated Dune has officially landed in cinemas and viewers want to know if they should stick around for an end credits scene.

Based on the bestselling books by Frank Herbert of the same name, Dune is a sci-fi epic movie which stars Timothee Chalamet as Paul Atreides and Zendaya as Chani (Paul's love interest).

The story centres around Paul, "a brilliant and gifted young man born into a great destiny beyond his understanding, who must travel to the most dangerous planet in the universe to ensure the future of his family and his people," says Warner Bros.

"As malevolent forces explode into conflict over the planet's exclusive supply of the most precious resource in existence - a commodity capable of unlocking humanity's greatest potential - only those who can conquer their fear will survive."

We can see why this would be popular with Marvel Cinematic Universe fans.

Does Dune have an end credits scene?

Unlike MCU movies, Dune doesn't have an end credits scene.

Usually an end credits scene provides confirmation that there will be a sequel to the movie as well as hinting at what will happen next.

So, does this mean there won't be a Dune 2? Not necessarily. Plenty of films don't have an end credits scene and go on to have sequels. As Dune is based on a book series, there is plenty of material to make a second Dune movie, so we guess it's down to how well the film does for Warner Bros, among other factors.

Does Dune end on a cliffhanger?

Another major hint that there will be a sequel to a movie is how it ends. If it ends with a cliffhanger, either it was written very badly or there's going to be a follow-up - it's usually the latter.

Warning: Spoilers alert in the next couple of paragraphs.

Many have reported that Dune ends rather abruptly, with Paul and his mother (Rebecca Ferguson) being accepted into the Fremen sect living in the deserts of Arrakis. But to win their trust, Paul has to fight the leader of the sect, Jamis (Babs Olusanmokun).

Paul agrees to fight Jamis and abide by the Fremen traditions and culture. The film ends with this fight, which is why fans think it ends rather bluntly.

Inverse explains: "Paul's acceptance into the Fremen culture is the catalyst for the rest of the story, which is partially linked to the eventual arrival of his baby sister Alia Atreides. Essentially, Paul can't become Muad'dib or the Kwisatz Haderach without this fight."

So basically, it looks like there's more to come.

So, will there be a sequel?

Yes. Dune: Part Two is now officially confirmed and has a 2023 release date. Here's everything we know about Dune: Part Two.

Film reporters who attended the screening have said the movie seems to adapt exactly half of Herbert's novel. Inverse also said the film's director, Denis Villeneuve, has repeatedly expressed his plans to make a part-two, so let's hope he steps on that straight away.

In the meantime, it's also been reported that Warner Bros and HBO Max are working on a TV spin-off series called Dune: The Sisterhood, which will act as a prequel to the Dune movie.
