House of the Dragon is the first of several new Game of Thrones spin-off series to be developed and it's coming in the new year. So what is the series about? And when is it set?

As well as House of the Dragon, which is a prequel to the main Game of Thrones, there are three more spin-offs being developed: Flea Bottom, which centres around the poorest part of King's Landing, 10,000 Ships, which looks at the backstory of Princess Nymeria, and 9 Voyages, which is based on Lord Corlys Velaryon, husband to Rhaenys Targaryen, on the Sea Snake vessel.

What time period is House of the Dragon set in?

House of the Dragon is set 200 years before the fall of the throne in Game of Thrones took place.

Based on George R.R. Martin's 2018 book, Fire and Blood, the 10-part TV series will tell the story of the House of Targaryen - the house that produced the Mother of Dragons, Daenerys Targaryen.

The prequel stars Milly Alcock as the young Princess Rhaenyra Targaryen, Eva Best as Princess Rhaenys Velaryon and Emily Carey as the young Alicent HIghtower.
